Teaching Reading at Spa School
Reading is taught across all Key Stages. There is a daily reading lesson for all classes and pupils are set individual reading targets each week. Pupils are taught specific skills to develop their reading skills throughout the school. Progress made towards individual reading targets is reviewed each week and assessment data is updated each term. Our pupils make good progress in reading.
Reading for meaning is constantly promoted in order to support developing independence skills. Symbols are used in instructions and displays to support all pupils and enhance understanding. Students are specifically taught the functional language they will need outside and beyond school and to help prepare them for independent living.
All pupils have access to high quality reading materials in their classrooms and in the school library. Each classroom has a reading corner and pupils are encouraged to borrow books to read at home. We promote the enjoyment of reading. Teachers in each key stage have taken part in the Power of Reading programme through CLPE. They have promoted effective strategies for teaching reading with all Spa teachers. You can find out more about the Power of Reading at https://www.clpe.org.uk/news/8
Pupils have opportunities to read independently, with staff, in pairs, groups or as a whole class. There are opportunities for role play, improvisation and imaginary play. Pupils regularly hear adults read aloud in order to encourage comprehension and enjoyment of written language.
Students in Key Stage 5 complete accredited courses in reading. Students gain Functional Skills or ASDAN Personal Progress qualifications.
